Geocache Description:

ENG

Since the end of the 19th century, when the good adaptation of the eucalyptus tree to the ecological conditions of the Cantabrian coastal strip was confirmed, there has been a succession of plantations of this and other exotic species on land which is normally grassland and scrubland with a clearly productive vocation.

It is estimated that the area currently occupied by these plantations in Cantabria is slightly more than 55,000 ha, of which about 2/3 is Eucalyptus globulus, distributed fairly evenly throughout the lowlands with three main centres: the area around Torrelavega, the Ribamontán-Galizano region and the far east.

On the other hand, the term "Sel", which gives its name to the village we are addressing, derives from the analogous pre-Roman word, probably Basque, used to designate the pastures: Selviejo, Sel de la Peña, Selaya, Sel del Tojo... all of them indicate an intensive use of high pastures.

In order to prepare these pastures, which were incompatible with the existing woodland at the time, large areas of trees were eliminated by fire and tilling (using ploughs and harrows).

This extensive use was organised on the basis of enclaves suitably conditioned with the corresponding fences, huts or cabins, of which we will be able to see several examples along this route.

ESP
