Geocache Description:

This is a very scenic route and during very hot sunny days has shade from the tree cover on either side of the footpatH. It is called Monks Walk and is an ancient footpath between Chertsey Abbey (only part of the walls remain) and the ancient church of St Mary's in Thorpe village. Thorpe village was listed in the Doomsday Book with a population of 150.

This path was the route the monks took on their journey from the Abbey to St Mary's Church. Thorpe village then belonged to Chertsey Abbey until the Abbey was dissolved by King Henry 8th in 1550s.

The ancient footpath now runs through the middle of huge artificial lakes which are now part of a theme park with sounds and views of the big dippers.

Chertsey Abbey was founded in the 7th century AD of Anglo Saxon England. It became the fifth richest Abbey in England with over 50,000 of land. After all wolves were culled from England in 1290 medieval monks with huge flocks of sheep generated huge wealth from wool which was exported to Flanders and Tuscany.

This annual cash crop of wool from farming was the initial source of wealth that paid for the cathedrals, monasteries, grand houses and palaces the building of which created the early medieval guilds of stonemasons, woodcutters. It led to all the other urban trades like millers, bakers, brewers, butchers and brewers. So many places are named after wool and sheep- like Sheperton on the other side of the river.

You are looking for a magnetic micro. Mind the barbed wire.
