Thorpe is a compact village and parish between Egham and Chertsey. It was densely populated in the Iron Age and features in the Domesday Book when it had an estimated population of 150/200. By 1901 this had risen to 500 and has increased steeply since.
Thorpe belonged to Chertsey Abbey until the Reformation of 1558. Then about half the parish belonged to a single family until the 1930 hence the unspoilt country village feel and 38 listed buildings and structures including several fine brick walls. There are two historic public house/restaurants (both in 17th century buildings), a Church of England school, an American school, and a village shop in the former 19th century village school building.
