WAXAHACHIE, pronounced Wox-uh-HATCH-ih (not Waks) is located south of the Dallas-Ft Worth Metroplex with a population around 33,000 might best be known for:
DALLAS (AP) - Several years ago (1988-93), when the Superconducting Super Collider was under construction near Waxahachie, a story made the rounds about the scientists who were commuting into the rural area from around the world.
Some of the scientists had gone to a nearby Dairy Queen for lunch. They were puzzled by the unusual Indian name of the town. One of them politely asked the waitress, ''Would you be so kind as to explain to us exactly how you pronounce the name of this place?''
She looked puzzled herself for a moment. Then she patiently explained in a drawn-out, Central Texas accent, ''DAY-uh-ree Kuh-WEEN.''
