Geocache Description:

This is an Earthcache, there is no physical container. You need to answer the questions below!

Granite is an “igneous” rock, formed from molten magma. As the magma cools and solidifies, a type of rock called igneous rock forms containing randomly arranged interlocking crystals. The size of the crystals depends on how quickly the molten magma solidified. The more slowly the magma cools, the bigger the crystals. When the magna cools quickly smaller crystals are formed. There are also mineral impurities that can be found in granite.

Phenocrysts these are large mineral crystals within the granite that are distinctly larger than the other crystals in the rock. These crystals develop when molten magma cools slowly causing the mineral crystals to grow to a considerable size. Phenocrysts often have a different appearance or texture compared to the rest of the rock matrix and can be easily identified visually.

Enclaves is an aggregate of minerals or rock observed inside a larger rock body. Micro-granular enclaves result from the introduction of mafic magma into the magma chamber and its subsequent cooling following incomplete mixing.

Xenoliths is a rock fragment that becomes enveloped within a larger rock as the magma rises to the surface. Xenoliths usually have different chemical compositions and textures compared to the granite.

Please send your answers to the following questions to me via the email or the message centre

Questions

1) Explain which feature to the right of the drain pipe?

2) What size and shape of the feature?

3) Does the feature have a different texture to the granite?

4) Take a photo in the area, you don’t need to include your face, you could just take it with your caching name on a piece of paper
