Geocache Description:

Jigsaw puzzles first appeared in the 18th century, and were created by painting a picture on a flat, rectangular piece of wood, then cutting it into small pieces using a jigsaw, fretsaws or scroll saws. The first commercial jigsaw puzzles were created around 1760. The design took world maps with individual nations cut out so that students could reassemble them as a geographical teaching aid.

They have since come to be made primarily of interlocking cardboard pieces, incorporating a variety of images and designs. In recent years variations have become available. These include double sided jigsaws, three dimensional jigsaws and some of a scene of characters on the box cover, but the jigsaw itself is the image of what they are looking at!

In the late 20th century, Hungarian Ernő Rubik created his magic cube puzzle. The cube is a 3-D combination puzzle with six faces, each containing nine stickers of a specific colour. An internal mechanism enables each face to turn independently enabling the colours to be mixed up. Solving the puzzle involves returning each face to its original single colour. To date, approximately 500 million cubes have been sold worldwide.

On a Rubik’s Cube, Red is opposite Orange, Yellow opposite White and Green opposite Blue.
