Geocache Description:

I've toyed with the idea of hiding a cache here for years, but the area all around is a designated SSSI. I've finally decided to opt for a multicache, which is less than elegant but it's better than nothing!

It is recommended to park at the suggested coordinates and follow the Coastal Path around a mile northwards.  The bothy is signposted from the Coast Path and whilst there is a well-defined track down to GZ it is quite steep and rough - this is reflected in the terrain rating.  There can be sheep grazing both around the bothy and along the approach.

The bothy was built around 1760 by a smuggler/merchant called John Robertson. Under the cover of a fishing operation, he smuggled tea in partnership with a Swedish shipping company. His smuggling operations made him a very wealthy man and he later bought Gunsgreen House in nearby Eyemouth to use as a bigger base for his operations.

Fishing was the cover for the smuggling operation; however, in more recent times, the bothy has been used as a fisheries cottage and there are unmistakable signs of more modern additions and alterations.The bothy was eventually destroyed by vandals, who set it alight.

Further down onto the rocky shore, on a wave-cut platform, you’ll find a weathered net winch - linked to the previous fishing operations. Behind it, built up against an overhanging rock is a small store, which would have presumably been used as either storage for the fishing operations or as a shelter. The magnificent rocky landscape around you is known as Lamberton Skerrs and this is the southernmost point on the east coast of Scotland.

In order to calculate the coordinates for the final location, you will need to visit the bothy and find the following information:

A. At the west side of the bothy is a set of concrete steps.  How many steps are there in total?

B. At the east side of the bothy is a window looking out over the North Sea.  Above this window, on the inside of the bothy, is a lintel made from a course of sandy-coloured bricks. How many bricks in total are there in this course?

C. There are two windows on the south-facing side of the bothy.  Above each of these, on the outside of the bothy, is a course of sandy-coloured bricks.  How many bricks in EACH? (Not the total of both)

CHECKSUM = 31
