Cache 16: Liberty, the retriever

The Golden Retriever is a medium sized Scottish breed of retriever dog. It is characterized by a gentle and affectionate nature and a striking golden coat. It is commonly kept as a pet and is among the most frequently registered breeds in several Western countries. It is a frequent competitor in dog shows and obedience trials; it is also used as a gun dog and may be trained for use as a guide dog.
After Richard Nixon resigned as president, Gerald Ford declared that his top priority was to help the country mend its wounds. Many of our hearts were ultimately won over by his dog, Liberty. Golden retrievers were a favorite breed of Ford and his wife, Betty, and one of their retrievers had passed away just before they moved into the White House. Their daughter Susan asked a friend of the Fords and White House photographer David Hume Kennerly for assistance in finding them a new puppy.
