Geocache Description:

Crosswinds Marsh: A to Z

(Killdeer)

The Killdeer, Charadrius vociferus, is a charismatic shorebird species found across North and Central America, recognizable for its distinctive appearance and behavior. Despite being classified as a shorebird, Killdeers are often found in a wide range of habitats, including grasslands, fields, pastures, and even urban areas with suitable nesting sites. They prefer open environments with short vegetation, where they can easily spot and capture their prey. Killdeers are renowned for their unique "broken-wing" display, used as a distraction to draw potential threats away from their nest or chicks, which are often located on the ground and vulnerable to predation.
The lifecycle of the Killdeer begins in early spring when pairs establish breeding territories in suitable habitats. The birds construct their nests on the ground, typically consisting of a shallow depression lined with pebbles, twigs, and other debris, often blending seamlessly into their surroundings. After laying a clutch of four speckled eggs, both parents take turns incubating them for about three to four weeks. Once hatched, the precocial chicks are able to leave the nest shortly after birth, though they remain under the vigilant care of their parents, who provide them with food and protection until they fledge. This fascinating bird's adaptive nesting strategies and protective behaviors ensure the survival of its offspring, contributing to the resilience of the species in diverse ecosystems.
