Geocache Description:

Crosswinds Marsh: A to Z

(Long-eared Owl)

The Long-eared Owl (Asio otus) is a captivating nocturnal bird of prey known for its distinctive ear tufts, which are actually feathers used for communication and camouflage rather than ears. These medium-sized owls are found across a wide range of habitats, including woodlands, forests, and sometimes even urban areas with suitable roosting sites. Long-eared Owls are skilled hunters, preying primarily on small mammals such as mice, voles, and occasionally birds, using their acute hearing and silent flight to ambush their unsuspecting prey under the cover of darkness. During the day, they roost quietly, blending seamlessly into their surroundings to avoid detection by potential predators.
Breeding typically occurs in late winter to early spring, with Long-eared Owls forming monogamous pairs for the breeding season. Females lay clutches of eggs in well-hidden nests constructed in dense foliage or tree branches, where they are incubated for around a month. Once hatched, the chicks are cared for by both parents and grow rapidly, fledging after about four to five weeks. As they mature, young Long-eared Owls learn essential hunting skills from their parents before eventually dispersing to establish their own territories. This lifecycle demonstrates the remarkable adaptability and resilience of Long-eared Owls, enabling them to thrive in diverse environments across their widespread range.
