(Nashville Warbler)

The Nashville Warbler (Leiothlypis ruficapilla) is a small migratory songbird known for its bright yellow underparts and olive-green back, with a distinctive white eye ring. These warblers breed in dense coniferous or mixed forests across North America, including Canada and parts of the United States. During migration, they can be found in a variety of habitats, including woodlands, scrublands, and gardens. Nashville Warblers primarily feed on insects, foraging actively in the understory and mid-canopy of trees, where they glean insects from leaves and branches.

Nashville Warblers are monogamous and typically form breeding pairs during the spring and summer months. They construct cup-shaped nests made of grasses, moss, and other plant materials, typically placed in low shrubs or saplings. Females lay small clutches of eggs, usually numbering around four to five, which they incubate for about two weeks. Once hatched, both parents participate in feeding and caring for the chicks until they fledge after another two weeks. After the breeding season, Nashville Warblers embark on their long migratory journey, traveling to their wintering grounds in Central America and the Caribbean. This lifecycle showcases the Nashville Warbler's seasonal movements and its importance as a migratory species in maintaining ecosystem health across its range.

The Cache: This cache is one of twenty-six that were placed for the 2024 Naturefest. The series focuses on the flora, fauna, creatures, and insects that may be found in Crosswinds Marsh. This cache is a small lock and lock style container hidden along the horse trail

It has been placed with the permission of Wayne County Parks. A permit has been submitted and is on file at the park office.

Crosswinds Marsh is open from DAWN to DUSK. Admission is FREE.
