Geocache Description:

Crosswinds Marsh: A to Z

(Gary Tree Frog)

The Gray Tree Frog, scientifically known as Hyla versicolor, is a captivating amphibian species native to North America, renowned for its remarkable camouflage and distinctive call. These tree frogs primarily inhabit deciduous forests, woodlands, and suburban gardens throughout much of the eastern United States and parts of Canada. Their cryptic gray or greenish-brown coloration helps them blend seamlessly into their surroundings, whether resting on tree bark or nestled among foliage. Gray Tree Frogs are arboreal creatures, spending much of their time in trees and shrubs, where they hunt insects and other small invertebrates, using their adhesive toe pads to cling to surfaces and navigate their vertical habitats.
The lifecycle of the Gray Tree Frog begins with breeding, which typically occurs in late spring or early summer. Males gather near water bodies such as ponds, marshes, or temporary pools, where they produce their distinctive mating calls to attract females. After mating, females lay their eggs in clusters, often attaching them to submerged vegetation or debris. Once hatched, the tadpoles undergo metamorphosis over several weeks, gradually developing limbs and absorbing their tails to become juvenile tree frogs. These juveniles then leave the water to embark on their arboreal lifestyle, completing the lifecycle of the Gray Tree Frog.
