Try as you might - you have looked everywhere and have come up empty handed. You dig your feet in and decide to get to down to the "nuts and bolts".

Practically speaking and as an idiom used in our modern day English language, if you talk about the nuts and bolts of a subject or an activity, you are referring to the detailed practical aspects of it rather than abstract ideas about it.
