Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Monuments & Multis Series — M&M Series
.
The Island has numerous small monuments & plaques commemorating oft forgotten people, places & events that played a role in the history of the Island. Most such commemorative reminders, if noticed at all, are usually driven by without stopping or reading. This series hopes to highlight the Island’s past through a number of quick, 2-stage multi caches that require visiting & reading such plaques.

Located in New Glasgow is a commemorative cairn and plaque to David Laird (1833-1914), designated a National Historic Person by Parks Canada in 1950.

The plaque reads:

Journalist and politician, born at New Glasgow, P.E.I., Laird founded the Charlottetown Patriot in 1XXX. He sat in the provincial legislature (1871-1873), and was a member of Parliament and Minister of the Interior (1873-1876). He was the first resident Lieutenant-Governor of the North-West Territories (1876-1881), and negotiated the Blackfoot Treaty in 1877. He returned to the editorship of the Patriot from 1881 until 1898 when he was named Indian Commissioner for Manitoba and the North-West Territories at Winnipeg. He died at Ottawa.
