On Wednesday, July 17, 1996, at approximately 8:20 P.M., TWA Flight 800 left JFK International Airport for a stop in Paris and then to Rome. Just 12 minutes into the flight the plane exploded over the Atlantic Ocean, not far from the coast of Long Island. All 230 people on the airline perished.
Two of the people on that plane were from Bel Air, Maryland.
There were many theories as to what happen from a terrorist attack to structural failure. After a 4-year investigation, the NTSB released a report stating the probable cause was a short circuit in a fuel tank. This accident led to changes in the design of how electrical systems are routed and protected within fuel tanks.
This memorial is for 42-year-old, Paula Ann Carven and her 9-year-old son, Jay.

Paula, a flight attendant for TWA and part-time real estate agent, was taking her son Jay for a planned vacation in Paris. Jay was a third grader at Ring Factory Elementary School.
I have been to this park many times with my kids, and now my grandkids, and never knew this memorial was here. I am glad to be able to share the story about this garden with others.
