Please do not walk in the prairie. You do not need to leave the sidewalk to find the cache.
Welcome to the Cache on the Prairie. This yard before you has been transformed into a micro ecosystem with over 40 species of plants native to this region of Wisconsin. Instead of a traditional lawn supporting perhaps a dozen species of invertebrates, this area supports dozenS through all the seasons. Without invertebrates the rest of the food chain disintegrates. No bugs = no birds.
In spring you might see the first blooms and early pollinators just waking up. Through summer the prairie is LOUD with insects and birds finding both food and shelter. In fall dead leaves and plants provide shelter for insects and mammals that will winter under the snow. And in the cold of winter you can often spot little trails from birds or small mammals in the snow or frost.
We hope your little side trip will inspire you to plant a few native plants in your own green space and encourage others to do the same.
