We placed this geocache while kayaking down the Indian River. But it could be found by land. If you are approaching this cache from the water, while paddling our Indian River series, you will need to exit your boat to reach the container.
How much do you care about the bottom of your boat ?? That's the question you need to ask yourself before you paddle this section of the Indian River. LOL ! Lots of people paddle it, but you might want to read this description first. We strongly recommend that you use a plastic kayak or heavy-duty plastic canoe for this series. The water is low, sometimes only ankle deep, and the bottom is rock. You WILL scrape. I can paddle it without getting out and walking my kayak, but when we brought our canoe, we had to get out and walk it several times and we left a lot of green paint on rocks all along the route. There are deeper areas too, where the river's current is flat, but, for most of the river, you will feel the current and there are several "swifts" (not rapids, just faster moving ripples) that make the journey a bit of an obstacle course (and FUN, so long as you aren't cringing when your boat hits a few rocks).
It is best paddled one direction only (north to south) as the water can be a tad fast moving in some spots. The put-in is 6 kms north at the end of Cooney Island Road where there is free parking for 2-3 vehicles. The recommended take-out is directly across from the Go-Cart Racetrack on David Fife Line, one km south of Highway 7. There is ample parking here for vehicles along the dirt roadside. The little bit of green space you will use to get your kayak up to your vehicle from this take-out location is privately owned by friends of mine. I talked to them about the sign they put up here and it is because this is a well-used take out for the river and my friends do not want any liability for accidents that might happen here. It is fine to use this location as a take out, (probably there will be other locals using it too), and it is less than 20 metres from the river to the road.
Now, if you decide to take your boat down this section, you can't say you weren't warned. How much do you care about the bottom of your boat ?? Have fun !
