N = Narwhals - Narwhals are known for their tusks, which are actually teeth, and have earned them the nickname "unicorns of the sea". Only about 15% of female narwhals have tusks, and most narwhals with tusks are male, which may indicate that tusks are used for mating competition. Narwhals are born with two teeth, but their tooth patterns change with age. The tusks are very sensitive and can have up to 10 million nerve endings each. Narwhals use their tusks to create precise sonar by making clicking sounds up to 1,000 per second and using the echoes to map their surroundings.
