Geocache Description:

Lord Robert Baden-Powell was the father of the world-wide Scouting movement. This is part of a small homage to this great organisation and its motto “Be Prepared”. A good way of being prepared is to be able to tie knots.

You are looking for a small camouflaged container on Baden Street. The container contains the log, pencil, short length of rope and some instructions for tying a Bowline knot.

Read on for backstory to the name and the skill session.

The name “Akela” (pronounced are-kay-lah) is taken by the Scouting movement from Rudyard Kiplings ‘The Jungle Book’. Kipling and Baden-Powell met in British India in the 19th Century and became close friends, with Kiplings ethos influencing Baden-Powel. This impact on BP later in-part manifest itself in the Scouting movement. A poem by Kipling is one of my favourites (‘If’) and I only know him through his text, so I can image the impact he would have had in person on Baden-Powell.

Akela is a name that can be given in Scouting to any leader, but in my and my childrens experience, only to the Troop Leader.

To be honest I do not know if this street was named after the great man, but I can easily convince myself that it was given Powell Street is just to the north.

If you are prepared to take the time to find the cahce take 2 minutes extra to learn what may be a new skill or practice an old one. One of my favourite knots. Use the rope (not for swapping) in the hide.

So go on, “you have the time, so learn to tie a bowline” and be better prepared.

A bowline is an excellent and very useful knot as it makes a fixed loop in the end of a line which is easy to undo.  Short animated example https://www.animatedknots.com/bowline-knot
