The Eisenhower Dollar

The Eisenhower dollar was issued from 1971 to 1978. It was the first dollar coin minted since the Peace Dollar ended in 1935. It was also a coin of “transition” in the practices of the US Mint. Because of the increased cost of silver, the coin for general circulation was nickel clad copper and the proof versions were only silver clad. And, to the dismay of avid coin collectors, this was the last of the large sized dollar coins.
The coin depicts President Dwight David Eisenhower facing left on the obverse. The reverse features a stylized image honoring the 1969 Apollo 11 Moon mission. It shows an eagle above the lunar surface holding an olive branch. The reverse design is based on the Apollo 11 Moon mission patch which was designed by astronaut Michael Collins.
