Geocache Description:

Weir's Way - Berwick, England!

Virtually everyone in Scotland - of a certain age - has seen at least one episode of "Weir's Way". This was a programme from the 1970s where Tom Weir - writer, hillwalker, historian and naturalist - explored the wilds of Scotland and brought the wonders into our livingrooms!

These little programmes were so popular that they have often been repeated on Scottish television since the Seventies. Favourite showings include 'An Edinburgh Volcano', 'The Lady of Lawers', 'In The Footsteps of Bonnie Prince Charlie' and '40 Miles To Sky'.

However there is a little known episode where for one time only Tom ventured over the Border to see what the 'sassenachs' are up to!
In this episode he visited the little town of Berwick in Northumberland.
This town was chosen for an episode because although it is English, it used to be Scottish!

Tom explores this interesting history of the town and provides a wonderful portrait of the place. Well worth a sortie over the border! This is a medium sized multi-cache that can certainly be completed in one go.

The starting location takes you to the Lord's Mount. Take time to explore this interesting site, and from the information board find out how many gun placements (A) and how many latrines (B) were in the massive wall.

Next stop, Berwick Train Station!

This station is very unusual in that it shares its site with the remains of a castle...

At the station, it's not one of the big trains you're looking for. Find the little Craigentinny engine and determine 19DC.

Now head out of the station and down to the final stage at the White Wall under the railway bridge.

At the board here you want to find the Bodleian reference: volume E and page 25F.

Now you can take a seat and determine the location of the cache at 55.773ABC, -2.013DEF

And whilst you're doing that, if a train approaches then give it a wave as you may get a response!
