Mount Meharry (Wirlbiwirlbi), the highest peak in Western Australia at 1248m above sea level, is located in Karijini National Park in the Pilbara region. It holds cultural significance for the Pandjima peoples, who refer to it as Wirlbiwirlbi.
Named after William Thomas Meharry, the Chief Geodetic Surveyor for Western Australia, Mount Meharry was discovered by Surveyor Trevor Markey and his party in 1967. The calculations confirming its status as the highest peak in Western Australia were performed by Tom Meharry. After William Meharry's death, the peak was named in his honor.
To reach the summit of Mount Meharry, you will turn off Great Northern Highway on Packsaddle Road and follow an unsealed road until you see the sign to turn for Mount Meharry. This will lead you into the eastern side of Karijini National Park where you will embark on the climb of a lifetime.
The track to the peak is extremely challenging but offers breathtaking 360-degree views. You can either hike or 4WD, both options by all means are not an easy feat.
If you choose to hike, DO NOT attempt this is the heat of summer and ensure you have sufficient drinking water. It is strongly advised that you do your research and plan carefully for this hike.
If you are in a 4WD, once you commit there is no where to turn around until you reach the top. There are step ups, slippery rocks, wombat holes, unnerving angles, and no room for error. The climb is steep and aggressive and should only be attempted by confident 4WDers. We strongly recommend a high clearance 4WD that is fully equipped for offroad adventures. But remember, what goes up, must come down!
At the summit there is a visitor book to sign, this is not the cache, it's still great to sign this and read the previous entries of other successors.
From the summit you will need to hike approximately 350mtr out along the ridgeline to the cache, the cache is not hidden on the top level, you will need to go down, you are looking for an ammo can under a rock ledge. The cache itself should be easy to find once you are on the right level, if needed there is a spolier pic.
For our First to Find, congratulations dMrPotatob on this epic climb and we hope you enjoy the goodies placed inside the cache for you. Let us know in your log just what you found ;-)
Now that's done, sit back, take in the views, have a picnic, make memories, before you have to start the dreaded descent.
**** This cache will take you the best part of the day, do not attempt it with only a few spare hours ****
