The posted coordinates will provide you with an excellent view of the 2024 mural painted to celebrate the history of Downing, Wisconsin.
The village is named for James Downing, a Civil War veteran and former employee of the Knapp, Stout and Co., Company. In 1867, he and his friend William James Doughty bought 80 acres of Railroad land for $6 an acre and settled their families there. They logged the land, and when the Wisconsin Central Railway was built in 1884, the settlement became officially known as Downing. The early residents of Downing had a big vision for their community, as evidenced by the extent of the official boundary shown in this picture. As you visit Downing, you will see that most of that territory is not occupied by houses or businesses. Contrast it with the size of nearby Glenwood City, which now has a much larger population and many more businesses.

The final for this multi is within the boundaries of Downing - although that covers quite a bit of ground!
