Along the water line of Mirror Lake, I noticed several trees cut down by beavers. There was one that was at least 30 inches in diameter. That had to take a bit of determination.
Beavers are known for chewing through wood, then hauling the logs off to build dams and lodges. They prefer small trees and saplings it seems, but I am always amazed to see very large trees taken down by beavers.
Beavers may also chew on trees, both large and small, to remove some of the bark or cambium layer for food. In these cases, the beavers are not trying to take the tree down; they are simply chewing on it. Their teeth continue to grow, so they have to chew on trees every day.
