As you may know, geocachers from all over the world are celebrating World Postcard Day.
Attending this event will earn you a souvenir!
Did you know?
- Postcards have been around since the late 1800s.
- Before postcards, envelopes with pictures on them were very popular.
- On February 27, 1861, Congress passed an act that allowed for privately printed cards to be sent via U.S. Mail.
- On May 1, 1873, the first government-produced postcard was issued.
- Until the 1890s, most postcards were printed with small sketches or designs on the message side. In the 1890s, photography started to be used in post cards.
- Post cards really became popular in the early 1900s, with 1900-1915 being the "golden era of postcards."
- The 150th anniversary of the post card was celebrated in 2019.
- The geocaching community saw several digital postcards from the cosmic cachers during Cosmic Quest in 2024.
