The land that comprises Burton, Ohio was part of the original Connecticut Western Reserve. In early Connecticut villages, the Village Green was surrounded by churches, the town hall, and prominent houses. The green was the common land to be used by the people of the township. When settlers arrived in the Connecticut Western Reserve, they chose the same pattern for their villages. Burton is one of several communities in Geauga County that has a central "square", just like Chardon and Thompson.
The sweetest tradition New Englanders brought to Geauga was maple syrup. This tradition is still active through independent syrup production and a permanent sugar camp operated by the Chamber of Commerce on Burton Square. Both Burton and Chardon Square are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and are the center of numerous community gatherings.
