キャットストリートの正式名称は「旧渋谷川遊歩道」で、1964年に渋谷川を地下に埋める暗渠化工事を経て舗装された遊歩道であり、現在も地下には、渋谷川が流れています。キャットストリートを含む商店街は、現在は穏田商店会と呼ばれています。「穏田」という地名の由来は、徳川幕府が開かれた400年近く前に遡り、家康が信頼していた伊賀忍者の一族郎党をこの辺りに住まわせ、忍者の隠れ里ということで『隠田』と呼ばれましたが、いつからか『穏田』という字を使うようになったといわれています。
ハイブランドが並ぶ表参道、交通量が多く、たくさんの人々が足早に行き交う明治通り、これらと隣接する位置にありながら、どちらとも似つかない親しみやすさは、住宅街が近いのも去ることながら、昔から続く和菓子の店や青果店、精米店などが今も残り、新しく出来たショップたちと共存しているからかもしれませんね。

The official name of Cat Street is the “Old Shibuya River Walkway. It is about 1 kilometer long, stretching from Jingumae 3-chome to 5-chome in Shibuya Ward, and is located on a back street one street over from Meiji-dori to Omotesando, connecting Shibuya and Harajuku. Cat Street is a promenade that was paved in 1964 after culverting the Shibuya River underground.
Although located next to Omotesando, with its high-brand stores, and Meiji-dori, with its heavy traffic and many people passing by at a quick pace, the area has a familiarity that is not similar to either of them, perhaps because it is close to residential areas, but also because traditional Japanese confectionery stores, fruit and vegetable stores, and rice mills still remain, coexisting with newly built stores. The reason may be that they coexist with the new shops that have been established.
