James Macandrew made his home here in the 1860's. A flamboyant merchant and politician, Macandrew arrived in Dunedin in 1851 and eventually became the Superintendent of Otago (1860). Concentrating on politics, Macandrew's business interests suffered and eventually collapsed leading to him being jailed for debt and being dismissed as Superintendent. But he was popular with the public and was later re-elected as Superintendent (1867).
