Park at the Welcome Center near the entrance to the Post. The military post at Fort Oglethorpe was home to the 6th Cavalry and horses were extensively involved throughout the Post's active Army life (1902-1948). The Parade Grounds were frequently used for training horses both for military purposes and for recreation. Three of the original jump hurdles are still in place and you are looking for one near the gazebo. Please return it exactly as found. Placed with permission of City of Ft. Oglethorpe staff.
From this location, you can look straight south and see the area where Camp Thomas was. (Now part of the Chickamauga-Chattanooga National Battlefield Park).
