Samantha Plantin

1827-1899

Samantha Plantin is known for being the first black female landowner in the  city of Manchester. She broke the color, gender and economic barrier in the 1800's. She has been recognized by the NH Registry of Historical Places with a plaque on Concord St.

What is her connection to New Boston? The Plantin family is noted in the 1820 census as free colored people. Samantha went to Manchester in 1844 and worked in the Amaskeog Mills. She saved her money and was able to purchase land from the company. She later sold the land and with the profit was able to build her home in 1890.

Samantha never married or had any children. In 1899 she was described in the New Boston Old Folks Day Report as "a truly remarkable woman and her life was filled with good works."

Samantha died in 1899 at the age of 72 10 months of pneumonia
