Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a small series that chronicles the History of Corf Campsite and the super heroes who made it happen along with some stories or memories that have passed down through the generations. I have set them up as a small circular walk, approximately 6.5km, around the local area from Newtown to Shalfleet.

History of The Corf Hound

The Corf Hound is likely the oldest of the campsite's folklore/cryptids. Described as a large canine with black fur and red eyes, its form has stayed consistent throughout the many retellings of its existance.

Current recounts of its mention date back to the early 1970’s, however the origin is likely much earlier and would coincide with one of the Wardens who owned a large black dog.

Said Warden and canine companion would likely patrol the camp at night, leading to many a memorable encounter in the dark by the light of a paraffin lantern or a full moon.

Such tales were passed on through the years around the campfire in the grand tradition of spooky story telling, with the intended side effect of keeping children in their tents after lights-out.

On one particular camp, the adolescent leaders decided to spice up the story by secretly bringing a costume werewolf hand. Having laid the groundwork during that evening’s campfire, describing the fearsome beast that would prowl the campsite in search of children, the leaders proceeded to claw at the canvas tents under the cover of darkness.

Apparently the younger campers did not audibly react to their antics. However, when letters of complaint from disgruntled parents made their way back to the leaders describing a wild animal scaring their child half to death, it was decided such antics should not be repeated.
