From the mid-1700s, the Nuwekloof Pass became the new entrance to the Tulbagh valley. The pass crossed and re-crossed the riverbed of the Little Berg River. At the toll gate, travellers papid to help cover the costs of maintaining the pass. The pass was so narrow that two wagons could not pass each other. At such narrow points, the drivers would crack their long whips, which would be heard at a long distance, so that the wagon that arrives first may get through unimpeded before another enters it. The actual remnants of the old toll are across the road, but a beautiful guest farm is now situated near the entrance of the pass. This pass is an entry point into the Karoo Forgotten Highway Route.
