The Gregynog Series is a series of geocaches designed to take you on a walk of exploration around the 750 acre estate. Steeped in history, a house has stood on this estate since the 12th century, however the house that stands here now is about 150 years old, but does incorporate older elements. The once 8000 acre estate originally encompassed most of the village of Tregynon and surrounding farms. The estate has been home to Barons, the famously philanthropic Davies sisters, a Red Cross convalescence home during World War II and a university campus! Now a charity, Gregynog boasts a National Nature Reserve (NNR) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and provides an amazing escape into nature. There is a small charge to park here which helps to maintain the estate.
These geocaches are being placed in partnership with Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust as part of the Welcome Home to Nature Project, funded by the Nature Network Fund from Welsh Government.
Please note: This series is designed as a day out, and as such involves quite a lot of walking, about 6 miles in total. Each geocache has a waypoint to lead you back to the car park at any point in case you do not want to do the entire series in one go. Some of these geocaches take you away from the main paths and can be muddy at times and are not always suitable for buggies and pushchairs. Geodogs are welcome but must be kept on leads due to stock grazing on site. The caches are mostly pretty small but there are some tiny surprises for the first few finders. You may find tweezers useful for some caches.
The second of the Gregynog Series geocaches takes a look at The Warren. Part of the Gregynog SSSI, The Warren is designated as oak parkland habitat and the lichens and invertebrates associated with ancient trees. Despite being native to the UK, Bracken can at times be an invasive species and without thick woodland cover can spread over grassland. The Welcome Home to Nature Project will be looking to utilise horses to carry out Bracken rolling as a method of control. A waymarker will help you find the Warren
