Kassiopeia (Cassiopeia) on pohjoinen tähdistö, jonka kirkkaimmat tähdet näyttäytyvät taivaalla W-kirjaimen kaltaisena. Pohjoisella pallonpuoliskolla tähdistön voi nähdä ympäri vuoden. Kirkkaimmin Kassiopeia loistaa marraskuun koillisella taivaalla. Kassiopeia ja Otava sijaitsevat samalla etäisyydellä Pohjantähdestä, mutta vastakkaisilla puolilla taivasta. Linnunrata kulkee Kassiopeian halki.
Kassiopeian tähdistö on saanut nimensä Etiopian kuninkaan Kefeuksen kauniin ja ylimielisen puolison mukaan. Myytti kertoo Kassiopeian kehuskelleen mieluusti tyttärensä prinsessa Andromedan viehättävyydellä. Kassiopeian mukaan hänen tyttärensä kauneus ylitti merten jumala Poseidonin tyttärien, nereidejen, viehkeyden. Kun Poseidon sai kuulla moisesta poskettomasta väitteestä, hän kimpaantui ja lähetti merihirviön piinaamaan Etiopiaan.
Merihirviön kiusatessa maataan, Kassiopeia ja Kefeus kääntyivät epätoivoisina oraakkelin puoleen. Oraakkeli suuressa viisaudessaan kertoi, että ainut keino merihirviön häätämiseksi oli prinsessa Andromedan uhraaminen sen suupalaksi. Kuningaspari ei nähnyt muuta vaihtoehtoa valtakuntansa pelastamiseksi, joten he kahlitsivat tyttärensä kiinni kiveen merihirviön armoille. Andromedan onneksi viime hetkillä paikalle purjehti kreikkalainen sankari Perseus, joka onnistui täpärästi pelastamaan Andromedan hirviön illallispöydästä.
Poseidon raivostui silmittömästi Andromedan pelastumisesta. Kostonhimosta sokaistuneena hän noitui lopulta kehuskelevan Kassiopeian ylös taivaalle tuoliin sidottuna. Siellä Kassiopeia istuu yhä tänäkin päivänä, ja puolet vuodesta ylösalaisin muodostaen taivaalle tuikkivan W-kirjaimen, joka tämänkin kätkön sijainnista kirkkaina öinä näkyy.

Cassiopeia is a northern constellation whose brightest stars appear in the sky like the letter W. In the northern hemisphere, the constellation can be seen throughout the year. The brightest Cassiopeia shines in the northeastern sky of November. Cassiopeia and the Plough are located at the same distance from the North Star, but on opposite sides of the sky. The Milky Way runs through Cassiopeia.
The constellation Cassiopeia is named after the beautiful and arrogant consort of King Cepheus of Ethiopia. The myth says that Cassiopeia liked to brag about the charm of her daughter, Princess Andromeda. According to Cassiopeia, her daughter's beauty surpassed the charm of Poseidon's daughters, the Nereids. When Poseidon learned of such a cheekless claim, he flinched and sent a sea monster to torment Ethiopia.
While the sea monster was teasing their land, Cassiopeia and Cepheus, desperate, turned to the oracle. The Oracle, in its great wisdom, reported that the only way to evict the sea monster was to sacrifice Princess Andromeda. The royal couple saw no other option to save their kingdom, so they chained their daughter to a stone at the mercy of a sea monster. Fortunately for Andromeda, at the last minute, Perseus, a Greek hero, narrowly managed to rescue the Andromeda from the dinner table of the sea monster.
Poseidon was utterly enraged by the rescue of Andromeda. Blinded by revenge, he finally bewitched the boasting Cassiopeia up into the sky bound to a chair. There, Cassiopeia still sits to this day, and half the year upside down, forming a twinkling letter W in the sky, which can also be seen from the location of this cache on clear nights.
