L'attuale chiesa parrocchiale fu costruita nel corso del XVII secolo, ma alcune fonti storiche documentano l'edificio già a partire dall'anno 1000; essa fu soggetta inizialmente all'abbazia di San Fruttuoso, nella baia omonima.
L'edificio è diviso a tre navate e all'interno sono presenti, oltre alla già citata statua della Madonna della Lettera scolpita nel 1766 da ignoto scultore, anche diversi cicli di affreschi del pittore Nicolò Barabino. La facciata in stile barocco ospita al centro, in una nicchia, la statua marmorea di san Giacomo.
Secondo la tradizione, il 20 giugno 1783, alcuni pescatori trovarono nella baia dinnanzi a Corte una statua lignea; la issarono a bordo, ma la persero a causa delle forti onde; riuscirono a riprenderla e la nascosero sul fondo della imbarcazione. Quando giunsero a terra, alcuni bambini scoprirono il nascondiglio della statua. Gli abitanti di Corte, venuti a conoscenza del fatto, persuasero i pescatori a donare il manufatto alla Chiesa di San Giacomo.
In seguito si venne a sapere che la statua Lignea della Madonna della Lettera, raffigurante la Vergine Maria con in Bambino Gesù sulla mano sinistra, e sulla destra una lettera, è copia della statua presente nel Santuario di Messina (posta sul frontone della dogana). A causa del forte terremoto del 1783 essa cadde in acqua e fu trasportata dalle correnti marine da Messina fino al largo di Santa Margherita, dove fu così fortunosamente rinvenuta. Nella Chiesa di San Giacomo di Corte sono contenute importanti opere tra cui due tele di Gerolamo Schiattino, una del 1848 dedicata all'immacolata Concezione e l'altra intitolata a Maria Regina della Città. Gerolamo Schiattino (1821 - 1875) è l'autore dell'affresco di Via Bottaro, importante testimonianza di gesta sammargheritesi collegate all'antica attività della pesca del corallo che lo videro coinvolto.

The current parish church was built during the 17th century, but some historical sources document the building as early as the year 1000; it was initially subject to the abbey of San Fruttuoso, in the bay of the same name.
The building is divided into three naves and inside there are, in addition to the aforementioned statue of the Madonna della Lettera sculpted in 1766 by an unknown sculptor, also several cycles of frescoes by the painter Nicolò Barabino. The Baroque-style façade houses the marble statue of Saint James in a niche in the center.
According to tradition, on June 20, 1783, some fishermen found a wooden statue in the bay in front of Corte; they hoisted it on board, but lost it due to the strong waves; they managed to recover it and hid it on the bottom of the boat. When they reached land, some children discovered the hiding place of the statue. The inhabitants of Corte, having learned of the fact, persuaded the fishermen to donate the artifact to the Church of San Giacomo.
Later it was learned that the wooden statue of the Madonna della Lettera, depicting the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus in her left hand, and a letter in her right, is a copy of the statue present in the Sanctuary of Messina (placed on the pediment of the customs house). Due to the strong earthquake of 1783 it fell into the water and was transported by the sea currents from Messina to the coast of Santa Margherita, where it was thus fortuitously found. The Church of San Giacomo di Corte contains important works including two canvases by Gerolamo Schiattino, one from 1848 dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and the other entitled to Maria Regina della Città. Gerolamo Schiattino (1821 - 1875) is the author of the fresco in Via Bottaro, an important testimony of the exploits of San Margheritesi linked to the ancient activity of coral fishing in which he was involved.
