A quick C-n-D near an information kiosk and an old pile of tailings from
The Master Key Mine.
One of the many gold mines that sprung up in the Hahns Peak area in the late 1800s.
The discovery of gold in the Hahns Peak area brought the first settlers to this region in the late 1800s.
The Master Key Mine claim was staked in 1897 but, major discoveries were not recorded until 1919.
The Master Key Mine is less known for what was recovered from it and more for its eccentric manager, Thomas Kleckner. Kleckner is said to have chased his wife with a butcher knife from his Master Key cabin to Columbine one cold winter night after "voices" told him that her ghost could reveal the location of the gold lode.Mrs. Kleckner narrowly escaped and was on the next stage back to Ohio the following morning.
Thomas Kleckner operated the mine until his death in 1936.
Had Mr. Kleckner been succesful this mine might have been known as
The Skeleton Key Mine.
