Geocache Description:

In the Square are two of the historic buildings in Foggie. The Fife Arms Hotel is one of the earliest, dating from the 18th Century, while the former Temperance Hotel has a date stone of 1814.

The Square has always been the location for events celebrating national and local events. You can see mementoes of two of Queen Victoria’s long reign - the Jubilee Clock, erected on her Golden Jubilee in 1887, and the Jubilee Fountain, gifted by William Auchinachie, Aberchirder’s first Provost, to mark her Diamond Jubilee. And a small plaque was placed beneath the clock during celebrations of Foggie’s 250th anniversary in 2014.

Cache is a small magnetic container. Please bring a pen/pencil.

The village of Aberchirder was founded in 1764 by Alexander Gordon, the 5th Laird of Auchintoul. Until 1823 its official name was, in fact, Foggieloan after a small farm community on the site of which it was built. There is some uncertainty as to how the name Foggieloan originated.

Why is Aberchirder called Foggieloan? There are various theories; the most likely is that there is a stretch of moorland north of where the farm town existed (and, now, north of the village) which was named Foggieloan Moss from two Gaelic words foidh (peat moss) and lòn (meadow), so Foggieloan.
