La locomotiva fu costruita in Germania nel 1883 dalla ditta Henschel & Sohn, per le nascenti tramvie vapore della provincia di Pisa. Le prime sei locomotive, come da tradizione dell'epoca, ebbero tutte nomi importanti: Vittorio Emanuele, Galileo Galilei, Dante Alighieri, Leonardo Fibonacci, Alfredo Cappellini e Camilla del Lante. Questa prima dotazione di macchine entrò in servizio nel 1884 sulla tratta tranviaria Pisa-Pontedera, nel 1887 nella diramazione Navacchio-Calci-Uliveto e nel 1892 nel tratto completato fino a Boccadarno. La locomotiva a vapore fu attiva per 37 anni a Pisa, fino al 1921, quando fu ceduta alle tramvie bolognesi, Dal 1932 al 1960 il tram fu sostituito, nel tratto da Pisa verso il litorale, da una linea elettrica. La "Dante Alighieri", unica superstite in quanto tutte le altre vennero demolite, è divenuta di proprietà del dott. Mauro Ferrato della ditta Ferrato Davide S.a.s. di Padova. La locomotiva, che si ritiene la più antica d'Italia, nel 2021 vieno richiesta in comodato d`uso dal Comune di Pisa, per metterla in mostra in questa piazza, esattamente sull'antico tracciato.

The locomotive was manufactured in Germany in 1883 by the company Henschel & Sohn, for the nascent steam tramways in the province of Pisa. The first six locomotives, in the tradition of the time, all had important names: Vittorio Emanuele, Galileo Galilei, Dante Alighieri, Leonardo Fibonacci, Alfredo Cappellini and Camilla del Lante. This first provision of machines entered service in 1884 on the Pisa-Pontedera tramway line, in 1887 in the branch Navacchio-Calci-Uliveto and in 1892 on the completed section up to Boccadarno. The steam locomotive was active for 37 years in Pisa, until 1921 when it was sold to the tramways of Bologna. From 1932 to 1960 the tram was replaced, in the stretch from Pisa towards the coast, by an electric line. The "Dante Alighieri", the only surviving locomotive as all the others were demolished, became the property of Dr. Mauro Ferrato of the company Ferrato Davide S.a.s. of Padua. The locomotive, which is belicved to be the oldest in Italy, was requested in 2021 on loan for use by the Municipality of Pisa, to put it on display in this square, exactly on the ancient route.
