Community Celebration Events - 2025
This year in 2025, Ground Speak will be celebrating 25 years of geocaching. It all began on what as known as “Blue Switch Day” on May 2, 2000, when then President William J. Clinton allowed the use of the Dept of Defense to all limited use of their satellites for civilian use.
This soon began to have a huge interest for placing of geo cache containers to be hidden throughout the world. The first was called a “stash cache” and hidden on May 3, 2000, a few miles South of Viola, Oregon. The hider was a gentleman named Dave Ulmer. Which was a 5-gallon bucket full of various items. See GCGV0P “ Original Stash Tribute Plaque”.
This first cache was short lived. It was destroyed by a road maintenance crew with a mower. Then on May 30, 2000 a tribute cache was placed in recognition of the original stash container. The rest is history and there are over 3 million active caches worldwide today.
To celebrate Groundspeak 25 years of geocaching. There are selected geocachers given the opportunity to help celebrate the silver 25-year anniversary of geocaching between Jan 1, 2025 and December 31, 2025. Here in Cache-Cadian Land, we are kicking off the celebration with a event on January 1st of 2025. Yes, it is New Years Day so Happy New Years, come out and lets kick off 2025 with an event.
Where: Kodi's Noon Saloon, 154 Pateros Mall Pateros, WA
When: January 1, 2025
Time: 1300-1500
My intentions for holding this in Pateros, WA is to make it more convient for attendees from Northern parts of our Cache-Cadian Chapter not having to drive greater distances like the frequently do for enents in the Wenatchee area.
This Event is part of a limited release of Community Celebration Events to celebrate 25 years of geocaching. Geocachers hosted events between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2025. Learn more about Community Celebration Events on the Geocaching Blog.
