Geocache Description:

Dég - Hungary; Sight: Festetics castle is near Lake Balaton; Terrain: 1.5 (dirt road and dense forest); Altitude: 118 m

Festetics castle is near Lake Balaton in the rich Hungarian countryside. The castle was designed by Pollack Mihály and built between 1815-1819.

Two streams, the Etelka-víz and the Bozót patak, meet here at Mezõföld. The Castle's connection to the region is it's building and garden design.

Dég, where we are going, is a “cul de sac”- type village accessible from the main road No. 64 that runs between Enyig and Simontornya.
From the castle, you’ll have a nice view of English Park and the Vértes mountains.

There is a beautiful rock garden in the foreground and near the castle an ornate driveway lined by centuries old oak-trees. A decorative hand cut stone staircase opens to a double row of Doric columns and a tennis court. Near the tennis court you’ll find an ancient Japanese locust tree (Robinia Psuedoacacia) and an artificial cavern with a freshwater spring.

To the south, on the other side of the castle, a wonderful scene unfolds before your eyes-the Festetics Castle park. In the foreground you’ll see giant old trees and a large grassy glade that gently slopes towards the lake.
On the shore there are old black and white poplars, lime, oak and pine-trees as well as a “Dutch“ summer cottage on the island in the lake. In the summer, the cottage is a working museum. Many years ago a boat would have been necessary to reach the island, but nowadays you can use a small bridge. On the water’s surface you’ll see a great number of water lilies and at one time the area around the lake there was a preserve where deer and pheasants were bred.
The geocache is across the shore. The picture entitled hiding place will help you to find it. Be careful and thorough approaching the area because the leaves disturb the GPS. The hiding place is a hole between the roots system covered with moss.
The actual cache is a kitchen-box (diameter = 18 cm, hight = 7 cm).

We hope you have a nice walk and a successful cache hunt.

Anikó, Miklós and the translator Cserve.
