In December of 2001, Dr. Mead Shaffer donated 430 acres of land to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for the enjoyment of future generations, and the Varden Conservation Area was created. Thanks to Dr. Shaffer’s generous donation, the Varden Conservation Area is open free of charge to the public, where visitors can picnic, fish in the Tannery Pond, hike trails, and learn about the unique plants and animals that call the VCA home.
This cache can only be accessed by the hiking trails. All cachers must park in the Mid-Valley Access parking area.
When you hiking in the fields and forests of once was old farms, you will see many stone walls. These stones were pulled up while plowing the fields and used to build walls to delineate property ownership in the area. Please take a few minutes to notice these amazing handmade structures.
