A Ilha do Rato é uma formação arenosa dunar com cerca de 10 hectares e tem vegetação rasteira.
Pertence ao concelho do Barreiro.

"Ilha do Rato" is a sandy dune formation measuring around 10 hectares and has low vegetation.
It belongs to the municipality of Barreiro.

A história da ilha é anterior ao século XVII. Foi desde muito cedo local de habitat e de desenvolvimento da ostra portuguesa.
- Em 1858 foi doada pelo Rei D. Luís a um cabo.
- Em 10 de Agosto de 1867 começou a concessão de exploração da Ilha do Rato sendo o Doutor José Vicente Barbosa du Bocage quem obteve a primeira concessão por trinta anos.
- Em 15 de Fevereiro de 1873 foi transferida pelo contratante, José Vicente Barbosa du Bocage, para o francês Henri Place 
- Em 12 de Setembro de 1883,  foi reconhecido o direito à exploração da ilha a Eduardo Honourous, legitimo sucessor de Henri Place.
- Posteriormente, foi vendida a sua concessão a Sousa Leal.
- A ilha foi ainda explorada pelo brasileiro França Neto e moradia de ingleses que hasteavam a bandeira britânica aos domingos, no chalé de madeira da Ilha.
- Em 2005 foi comprada por Ismael Duarte
- Mais tarde, a leiloeira Oportunity, realizou o leilão da ilha mas, como o "segredo é a alma do negócio", a empresa não revela o nome do comprador.

The island's history dates back to the 17th century. From an early age it was the habitat and place of development of the portuguese oyster.
- In 1858 it was donated by King D. Luís to a military corporal.
- On August 10, 1867, the exploration concession for Rato Island began with Doctor José Vicente Barbosa du Bocage who obtained the first concession in thirty years.
- On February 15, 1873, it was transferred by the contractor José Vicente Barbosa du Bocage to the Frenchman Henri Place 
- On September 12, 1883, Eduardo Honorous, legitimate successor to Henri Place who was recognized as having the right to explore the island.
- Subsequently, its concession was sold to Sousa Leal.
- The island was also explored by Brazilian França Neto and was home to Englishmen who raised the British flag on Sundays, in the island's wooden chalet.
- In 2005 it was acquired by Ismael Duarte
- Later, the auctioneer "Oportunity" held the island's auction and, as “secret is the soul of the business”, the company did not reveal the name of the buyer.

A ilha hoje luta e teima em resistir à erosão provocada pelos catamarans. A erosão provocada pelas ondas do Catamaran constituem um sério risco à Ilha onde no espaço de cinco anos destruiu o areal e a casa do capataz que se encontra em ruínas.

The island today struggles and insists on resisting the erosion caused by Catamarans. The erosion caused by the waves of the Catamaran is a serious problem for the island, where in the space of five years it destroyed the sand and the foreman's house, which is now in ruins.
