Geocache Description:

Cache is not at the posted co-ordinates. First you need to complete the Quay to Quay Pathway South Adventure Lab.  The actual co-ordinates will be revealed as you complete the Adv. Lab stages.

The physical hide is located a short distance from the path on the waterfront.  This unpaved area can be a little wet in the winter.     There are 2 "prize" envelopes in the cache. One for FTF, and the second one is for the Fourth to Find.

BE AWARE FOR BICYCLES ON THE PATHWAY.

The Somass sawmill was built in 1935 by Bloedel Stewart and Welch. The mill was built to cut very large old growth timber. The "waste" wood chips and sawdust from the mill were used by the pulp and paper mill to the north. The Somass sawmill closed permanently in 2017 due to log supply and tariffs on softwood lumber going to the US.

The site was acquired by the City of Port Alberni in 2021. The City of Port Alberni has partnered with Matthews West Developments Ltd. to  develop the Somass Lands. With this partnership, the city expects to transform the former site of the Somass Division sawmill into a mixed-use site that provides public access to the waterfront, generating “a vibrant waterfront community for residents and visitors to enjoy.” This developer  has completed a similar transformation of an industrial water front property in Squamish.
