Geocache Description:

Newfoundland Black Bear

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newfoundland_black_bear

The Newfoundland black bear (Ursus americanus hamiltoni) is a morphologically distinct subspecies of the American black bear

Distribution

It is endemic to the island of Newfoundland in Atlantic Canada. Found only on the Atlantic island of Newfoundland, Canada.

Habitat

Mainly found in the black spruce forests and balsam fir forests of the island.

Description

Generally larger than mainland black bears, males weighing between 90 and 136 kilograms although bears of 290 kgs and above have been recorded..  Females are significantly smaller and averaging between 50 to 80 kgs. Life span is around 20 years but hunting reduces this to an average life expectancy of less than ten years.

Size

The Newfoundland black bear ranges in size from 90 to 270 kilograms (200 to 600 lb) and averaging 135 kilograms (298 lb). Newfoundland’s black bear is recognized the world over for its large size. It has been estimated by wildlife biologists that the black bear population on the island is over 10,000, with some of these big bruins weighing in at up to 312kg/680lbs! This is about double the size of the average North American black bear.

Diet

Newfoundland black bears are omnivorous. They eat moose and caribou, grasses, forbs, flowering plants, roots, fir and spruce needles, insects and carrion.  They will also eat small rodents and occasionally prey upon livestock.

Hibernation

It also has one of the longest hibernation periods of any bear in North America. Bears lose around 30% of their body weight when they are denning. During this period, typically ranging from November until April, bears will not eat, drink, urinate or defecate while in their dens. The bears typically are in deep hibernation during the dark winter months of November and April, it is not the same sleeping time for all the bears as this depends on their location and habitat, that will dictate the length of rest they need to undertake. Having spent the past six months putting on as much weight as possible, local bears are prepared to snooze for the next six months. Through some remarkable feat of metabolism, adult bears will not eat, drink, or eliminate bodily waste for almost half a year.
