Highway 29 is a bustling midwestern route, whisking travelers through little towns, sprawling fields of corn, and rolling Wisconsin hills. Communities and businesses alike thrive sitting just off the highway, and the location for Wisconsin’s Cache Across America hide is no exception. This special little cheese house is owned and operated by a Dutch-born cheese maker, and calls the quiet country town of Thorp its home. One of many excellent cheese houses in our fine state, this cache location is a true testament to Wisconsin’s nickname and heritage as “America’s Dairyland.”
When it comes to Wisconsin, images of cows, cheese, beer, brats, and the Packers come readily to mind. What is lesser known is that Wisconsin also thrives in the tourism business. According to Travel Wisconsin, 1 in 21 Wisconsin jobs are sustained by tourism in some way. Gorgeous natural areas, lively arts and music scenes, and engaging downtown experiences make Wisconsin a state folks return to.
As a proud Wisconsin native, I wanted to highlight a few of the diversely wonderful and distinctly recognizable aspects of our state. This site leans into our dairyland heritage and exceptional experiences by way of agro-tourism.
This cache has been placed on the property of a dairy farm, cheese house, store, and cafe all in one. CAA - Wisconsin is a great stopping spot for visitors to take a break after a long car ride and have a chance to stretch their legs. There are lots of dairy-themed activities available to visitors in the town of Thorp, but stopping to say hello to Violet will likely be the highlight. Violet, the flower box cow, is the keeper of this geocache and the newest addition to the property! She is named after Wisconsin’s state flower, and her ear tag denotes what number in the state lineup Wisconsin is. If you are having trouble opening the cache box, take a good long look at that ear tag. Please be kind and gentle with Violet, so she can live a long and happy life here on the farm.
You are not required to purchase or participate with the activities on the property in order to get this cache, nor do you need to speak to any employees if you do not want to. This cache is out in plain sight, and should simply require following the coordinates to find the prize.
Please be respectful of the cache container and the property it is placed on, as we have kindly received permission to place this cache from the managers of this establishment. Feel free to snap a photo with the cache box (I would recommend doing it in front of Dutchess the giant cow) and then return everything back to its place.
The nearby business is open from 7am to 7pm seven days a week. Please refrain from going after this cache after dark in the summer (or after closing hours in the winter months) out of respect to the property owners. Even though they love visitors, it is still an operational farm and we need to be respectful of their business and resources.
