Geocache Description:

The 'Frisky Fox' is such a fun alliteration! Here are some fun facts about the fox:

  • A group of foxes is called a skulk or a leash. They are generally nocturnal animals and live in the country as well as the city.
  • Foxes have excellent hearing - they can hear rodents under several feet of snow or a mouse squeak 100 feet away! They have keen eyesight and can jump up to 6 feet high.
  • Foxes are considered to be carnivores, but are also opportunistic - they will change their diets based on what foods are available. A fox will stalk and carefully target its prey, killing it by separating the vertebrae with one bite like a cat.
  • A fox is generally a solitary and territorial creature, but a mated pair of foxes will stay together until the kits (young) are mature (about 7 months). Litters range from 2 to 6 kits. The father gets food for the mother while she nurses the young.
  • Foxes have more than 20 different calls. They produce vocalizations including whines, barks, yips, huffs, coughs, growls, yowls, howls and a chattering sort of sound called gekkering.
  • There are more than 20 species of foxes. They range in size from 2 to 30 pounds. Iowa is home to two different species of foxes, the red fox and the gray fox. The red fox is the most common. The gray fox is decreasing in population and studies are underway to determine the cause of the decease in numbers. The only continent without foxes is Antartica.
  • The gray fox is the only fox that can climb trees. They have been known to have their kits in a large hollow of a tree.
  • The average lifespan of a fox in the wild is three years.
