Old Stone Cabin Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Keystone: Greetings from Geocaching.com

I have been looking at caches in the area that have been temporarily disabled for a while now and it looks like your cache has been under the weather for some time. While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time I don’t think we can do so any longer. Therefore, I have archived this cache. If you haven’t done so already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

When repairs to this cache are completed and it is time to have it reposted, it will be no problem. Just drop me a note and let me know the GC waypoint number of the cache or better yet, the URL of the cache page. You will still be able to access your cache page just as before by going to your “My Cache Page” and clicking the link of your cache.

I will be more than happy to take a look at your cache again to see if it is still is within the guidelines of the Geocaching.com website for cache placement and posting.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and am looking forward to seeing your cache up and running in the future.

Thanks for your understanding,
Keystone Approver

Geocache Description:

Old Stone Cabin is found at the top of Millcreek Hollow, on the top of Laurel Ridge in Cambria County. I have no prior knowledge on who built the stone fortress, but it has been in existence for decades. The original construction must have been quite impressive with actual framed windows and an extensive ventilation system for an interior fire option. It would seem that the builder(s) of the structure were adults, not youths, due to the fine detail and complexity.

In order to begin a very aerobic search for the cabin, you must access the parking area off of route 271 on Mellot Drive in Upper Yoder Township. Parking can be found at the entrance to an old stone quarry at N40 18.358 W79 0.732 (as always, please do not block any roads). From this parking area you can begin your climb to the top of Laurel Ridge. I recommend taking the (upper) road that leads toward two water storage towers that can be seen from the parking location. The hike from your vehicle will lead you up along the edge of Millcreek Hollow - about a one mile hoof.

Soon after cresting the ridge, you and your GPS will begin a slow drop into a small valley that will eventually narrow the distance to about 1/10th of a mile from the Stone Cabin at N40 18.943 W79 1.354. At this point you will be led off of the logging road to the cabin that is located on the near hillside.

And on to the cache...

From the cabin you will only have to travel a short distance to the actual cache. The stash is contained in a green ammo box found in a small rocky depression not far from the cabin.

Best of luck,
watch for snakes,
and don’t forget your insect repellent!
