The Carosello Quarry, located nearby Ancient Noto, has many natural and historical attractions and is really worth a visit.
Until the earthquake in 1693 it was a huge cultural and economic center. Leather processing played a significant role in industrial production of the time. The ancient rock tanneries and mills, carved into the limestone rocks and caves, are still the visible witnesses of the past and we can explore them during the trip to our goal destination - hanging lake Laghetto pensile.
Asinaro River had more water once and provided the necessary water suply for the tanneries. The walley is sometimes very narrow with steep limestone walls and the river is surrounded by lush vegetation including willows, poplars and eucalyptuses. If you are lucky you can also see some crabs in the stream.
There are some freshwater lakes and small waterfals on the river. Laghetto Pensile with its exclusive location is the most interesting and beautiful.
Our reccomendation is to leave the car at the parking, than enter to ancient Noto through the stone gate Porta della Montagna, pass the ruins of the castle Castello Reale and descend into the gorge by a winding footpath and continue along the river throuhg the canyon to the lake. Next mission is obvious - find the cache + enjoy the lake and the scenery around. Return the same way is possible but it is better to continue down the valley, take the paved road, turn left and come back via ruins of ancient Noto. Waypoints of this cache can by useful.
The whole 7,5 km long round route takes about 3-4 hours but with exploring all interesting places on the way and some swimming or just rest at the lake it can be a nice all day trip.
