John Moses Browning

John Moses Browning (1855–1926) was an American firearms designer whose innovations revolutionized modern weaponry. Born in Ogden, Utah Territory, he grew up in a family of gunsmiths and developed an early interest in mechanics and firearms. At the age of 13, he crafted his first firearm using spare parts from his father’s shop. Browning is often hailed as the greatest firearms inventor in history, with 128 firearm patents to his name. His contributions span a wide array of designs, including rifles, shotguns, pistols, and machine guns. Among his most notable creations are the M1911 semi-automatic pistol, still in service today; the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR), widely used during World War II; and the M2 .50 caliber machine gun, a weapon still employed by military forces worldwide. Browning's innovations often introduced groundbreaking mechanisms, such as the short-recoil operation used in many modern semi-automatic and automatic weapons. His collaboration with Winchester, Colt, and Fabrique Nationale (FN) in Belgium resulted in iconic firearms like the Winchester Model 1887 lever-action shotgun and the Browning Hi-Power pistol. Browning passed away in Liège, Belgium, in 1926 while working on the Browning Hi-Power pistol. His legacy endures through his timeless designs, which remain benchmarks of reliability and effectiveness in the world of firearms.
