Geocache Description:

The Vietnam War (1 November 1955 – 30 April 1975) was an armed conflict between North Vietnam and South Vietnam.  Direct US military involvement greatly escalated from 1965 until its withdrawal in 1973.  In 1964, the US Congress gave President Lyndon B. Johnson authority to increase military presence without a declaration of war.  Beginning in 1969, American troops were withdrawn from border areas.  On 15 January 1973, all US combat activities were suspended.

President Gerald R. Ford announced on April 3, 1975, that U.S. aircraft delivering supplies to Saigon would carry Vietnamese orphans to the United States on their return flights. This became known as Operation Babylift.

Operation Frequent Wind was the final phase in the evacuation of American civilians and “at-risk” Vietnamese from Saigon. It was carried out on 29–30 April 1975, during the last days of the Vietnam War.  Casualties were relatively light. Marine corporals McMahon and Judge killed at the DAO compound were the only members of US forces killed in action during the operation; they were the last US ground casualties in Vietnam.  Both died in a North Vietnamese rocket attack on the morning of April 29, 1975.

Charles McMahon was a 21-year-old Corporal from Woburn, Massachusetts.

Darwin Judge was a 19-year-old Lance Corporal and Eagle Scout from Marshalltown, Iowa.  Judge was buried with full military honors in March 1976 in Marshalltown, Iowa.  GC7K2QH Linn Creek Trail: Darwin Judge

A memorial plaque was erected on the grounds of the US Consulate in Saigon (the former US embassy).
